Re: Twilight Imperium on April 19th
Eclipse is just too unforgiving in my opinion. A bad galaxy setup and its game over. TI3 at least has multiple paths to victory... We had VPs for the galaxy centre, tech, resources, influence, building... So varied which makes for a closer game.
Look how close the game today was... 7 points won with everyone else on 6 - bar the Nekro

And everyone was due between 1-4 points had the turn completed, I truly thought Ellis had it!

Don't forget the only reason I wasn't clear first was because of that law which granted everyone a VP apart from myself and the Virus! Cheats

I think I like big games. It becomes a much more immersive experience when you spend a full day on a game rather than an hour or two.
A game needs plenty of depth and variety to justify such a long play time and TI has that with a different problem facing you each turn and plenty of options for how to go forward.
As Sam said, though, it's the company that's most important. I really enjoyed the day. Thanks guys.

Seconded (or thirded, I guess!)BeardyTom wrote:As Sam said, though, it's the company that's most important. I really enjoyed the day. Thanks guys.
Some of my favourite moments in that game were between you and Aneurin, including the rather understated "Now, hang on!" as he launched an attack into one of your systems and later the classic "I think we need to renegotiate the terms of our alliance".
Hopefully we can do it all over again in July...
Re: Twilight Imperium on April 19th
Fourthed... I also like how the epic'ness continues between games - perhaps I'm talking as an experienced veteran but once someone betrays you in a game you never forget and it can affect you relationship in the next game... I will never trust Steve again - after a game in 2006.
I expect to lose heavily in July.
Confirmed for the Saturday by the way Paul - let's start the sign up.

Right we are then! I'll start a thread for Twilight Imperium on Independence Day. Very appropriate!Aneurin wrote:Confirmed for the Saturday by the way Paul - let's start the sign up.

Can take time explaining rules etc. Maybe if more people know how to play, it would have gone quicker? I need to sample it for myself though, so count me in next time you play (so long as I don't have a race that day).
If you get a bad start in Eclipse, I feel it's still possible to turn things around. If you get consistent bad luck though, you could be up the proverbial creek, sans paddle. There seems to be a healthy dose of luck in Eclipse, but if you employ the appropriate strategy, given your situation, often you can turn things around, to a degree. I really like the game, woukd play it again on a Tuesday, but only with a max of 4 players. Happy to do another 6 player some other time too.
What are the possible player counts for TI3?
Wondering if there are any other games like Eclipse / TI3...

Most people were pretty clued up on the rules - it's actually not a difficult game to understand - just difficult to master. I don't think the problem is down-time... there isn't that much (especially as I keep an eye on what each player is doing and when I can move on - perhaps while someone is building... I will shout which player is next up to take their turn)... there is just an awful lot to do each round. The only down time you get is when people are picking strategy cards... and maybe combat in which you aren't involved - but that's simultaneous so is quite quick.
TI3 can play up to 8 with the 2 expansions. Minimum is 3 players - but that ends as 2v1 and I don't like it. 4 players is a sweet number... you get 2 strategy cards each! I don't like 5 and 7 because the galaxy is uneven and some players get trade good bonus'...
8 and 7 play on a 3 ring galaxy... so wormholes play a major part in the game.
Other games - we talked about civilisation - the old version... that's pretty epic but not space based...

And of course you now have Ellis "The Traitor" from January!
That is a whole 25% of the table right there! I wonder who you will sit between in July?

OK, I'm adding you in on the other thread. Let us know if you can't make it...Jamie wrote:Can take time explaining rules etc. Maybe if more people know how to play, it would have gone quicker? Ellis, TomW, Alex and TomC need to get into the other TI3 thread quick to book their spot!

I'm good thanks Paul. It's a Saturday, nothing much on, just a 5k Park Run (probably at Graves) in the morning at 9am. Loads of time for me to do that, drive home, shower, breakfast, then over to your place for 10:30. Looking forward to it.

You need to make sure you have read and understand the rules - we wont have time to teach the basics...
