I think Colosseum lost its value as soon as the new edition was announced so I don't see the value in selling it really. Even when it was rare it was usually going for £50 on BGG so not crazy prices. If it's just me wanting to keep it, I'd consider buying it myself.

I've not played Sushi Go party, but happy to swap for it if it's better.

There's no chance of selling Coliseum, it's a club favourite.

Broadly supportive of keeping things 'fresh' and happy to consider Sushi Go Party. I think at least an annual library review, ahead of the Expo Bring and Buy, is necessary.

Also, regarding point 4, it would definitely help if people that arrive early could help with getting the club games out from underneath the seats and putting them on a table near the door. Ta.

No to coliseum... simple

Others - let's decide nearer the expo when it will have been 1 year - suggest cycling 2/3 games most. Plus maybe 1 new purchase from club funds?

Colosseum is great. Might as well trade up to the party version if it's better. Not a great fan of the original but it is quick

In fairness when we get there early - there is often people sat there... but agree - if they aren't or move get them out.

I'd like to suggest Risk Europe: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/204184/risk-europe

Currently about £32 on Amazon, after recently dropping from around £40.

Also, just for clarity and as a point of interest, who is the committee, how are they elected, and what is the process by which decisions are made?

There isn't a formal committee as such but there are a small group that sometimes make decisions, namely me, Aneurin, Liz, Kes, Paul G as well as Sam and Paul C who kindly offered to help manage the librarian.

There are no elections and the decision process is informal. If someone (anyone at the club) has an idea then we listen to it, put it on the forum and then go with the consensus. The relatively few decisions include buying new boards, paying for the forum and occasionally buying new games. Between us we also coordinate with the venues and organise the Christmas Party.

It isn't necessarily the most democratic system but it's evolved from us being a very small group and us being some of the longer standing members. We never want to make it more of a job than it currently is but were happy to discuss it.

CO2 is also getting a reprint this year, but I'm not sure how much the edition the club has gets played at the moment (other than by me). Colosseum always gets suggested whenever it's on the table and Karlb hasn't got a game yet, and I've seen it played more often than CO2.

I'd just like to say that it's nice someone is taking on responsibility for the library. I'm down with Sushi Go Party. Cash n Guns would be my vote, or Codenames: Pictures. Any other game I'd suggest would be because I want to play/own it myself (Troyes, Targi, Akrotiri, Takenoko etc) and not necessarily what I think would be games that are accessible to everyone at the club. Although now that I've mentioned it, Takenoko might be a good one.

Does anyone have any idea how often club games are being played?

Have my vote for Takenoko!

Maybe something like Tsuro, or something 2-player? Jaipur/7 Wonders perhaps?

Also John, I'm keen to play C02 again since I feel like the game didn't get its due when we played it last. Sometime in the next week or so?

There is a whole thread about it here...
http://www.sheffieldboardgamers.com/t936-who-runs-the-show-simple-you-do

The simple thing for me is there is an unwritten mission statement for this club - it's to play games and have fun... as soon as it gets bogged down in politics, AGMs and personalities taking over - I'm personally out... The club exists because it is a set of (occasionally) like minded individuals simply playing board games.

All that we need is a place to play that doesn't cost money - we have one.
A website to organise Tuesday meets - we have one (the £2 ANNUAL charge is to primarily make sure that is supported without adverts).
Be non-profit - ALL money is ploughed back into the club at Christmas through extra food/prizes or via table tops/the library.

The above are all that really need sorting...
If people want a more formal structure to their club - there are other clubs that run that model that I'm sure would be happy to take peoples money for the pleasure...

For this club... It is the library that really crosses into this 'formal' club territory and to be honest creates the most tension. The library existed from 6-8 years ago when I started. We charged £2 per week as part of a larger War games club. Around every 2-3 months we would have enough in the kitty to buy a new game. When we separated from the War games club (because it got bogged down in politics) we carried that model on but as our own personal collections grew the library just wasn't needed and we stopped weekly charges and thus adding to said library.

Last year - pre expo - it was decided that the library should pretty much just be gateway style games for new people that show up to try... with 2/3 games cycled out every year or so... (as to keep the library at a manageable size) for newer more popular/party games. So some of the more bizarre games in that library were sold and things like Sushi Go, Codenames and Carcassonne purchased. I think gone are the days that we take single requests for games that only 1 group at the club might play...

Coliseum does represent somewhat of a grey area. It's a classic first print - that can be seen by some as not fitting this gateway style. But equally the club could treasure it as people do like playing it and it is somewhat a reminder of the history of the club... Its like an old Mini... yes we could upgrade to a new BMW mini - but come on - that original model has a certain history and difference that one cannot put a value on.

I think the thing to be clear here - the club doesn't need to make lots of money... for what? Who would decide who spent all that money? Smells of AGMs and tedious voting... so games should be cycled and any games that are cycled should first be offered to the club members...

Everything Aneurin said made sense to me. Especially this bit.

I don't think anyone is proposing an increase in the formality of the club. Its easy-going casualness is what makes it relaxing and fun, right? My 2 cents anyway.

I think replacing Sushi Go with Sushi Go Party makes absolute sense. They are the same game, Party is just like Sushi Go: Director's Cut.

Seems that there is more than sufficient interest in keeping Colosseum that I don't think we should consider selling it.

No objection at all to replacing Sushi Go with the Party version (I would imagine on any given night there is probably at least one copy of Sushi Go brought by one of our members anyway should people want to play the original!)

I'd also be happy to see lighter stuff like Takenoko or Tokiado be added to the library. Perhaps something like Concept might be a good fit for end-night silliness?

Definitely feel that any games the cub sells should be offered first to "members in good standing" as the line goes. But crucially also at a reasonable price point.

Seems like Colosseum is far too popular to consider selling.

karl_b wrote:Also, regarding point 4, it would definitely help if people that arrive early could help with getting the club games out from underneath the seats and putting them on a table near the door. Ta.

Yeah, like Aneurin said it's difficult if people are already sat there, but I'll try to make more of an effort to get them out. It could do with a tidy under there too, they're sort of spread out along the bench.

JohnH wrote:CO2 is also getting a reprint this year, but I'm not sure how much the edition the club has gets played at the moment (other than by me).

I'd forgotten about CO2. If there's just a few people who play it maybe it isn't worth the club keeping it much longer. If you guys could play it again and decide if it's worth hanging on to that'd be good. Maybe one of you would like to buy it off the club?

JohnH wrote:I'd just like to say that it's nice someone is taking on responsibility for the library.

Good point, thanks to Sam for caring about it and trying to improve things.

JohnH wrote:Does anyone have any idea how often club games are being played?

There's a plan to have a system of writing on a sheet of paper in each box when they get used so we can track it. Will be very useful once it's in place.

Takenoko, Tsuro, Jaipur and 7 Wonders Duel are all good suggestions. I see Patchwork get played a fair bit so more two player games might be good. And party games for the end of an evening once people have finished what they signed up for and need something else to play. Cash n Guns or Concept seem reasonable.

I don't know if we need to buy any more right now though, apart from sorting Sushi Go, might be worth waiting till expo and seeing what we can get?

Andy S wrote:I don't think anyone is proposing an increase in the formality of the club.  Its easy-going casualness is what makes it relaxing and fun, right?  My 2 cents anyway.

Absolutely agree with this, I don't think anyone is proposing a change and I don't think we need it. Anyone should feel comfortable asking about it though and people are welcome to get more involved if they wish to. As has been said however, there's not much decision making to be done anyway.

DaveB wrote:Definitely feel that any games the cub sells should be offered first to "members in good standing" as the line goes. But crucially also at a reasonable price point.

I think this is fair. I don't like the idea of the club trying to make money out of games, that's not what we're about at all. Games should always be sold for fair prices.

A good, constructive discussion in full!

Let's make a short list (say 6 - Sam, thoughts?) of games of the likes mentioned here and then run a poll. We can definitely afford one, in addition to upgrading Sushi Go.

Edit - and count me in for games of CO2 and Colosseum.

First of all, as undisputed SBGC/RWI PitchCar Champion of Sheffield (which is how I'm going to be referring to myself in more formal and official boardgaming chat), I'd like to call Dibs on any possible selling of CO2 (although i'm betting it's going to get a deluxe kickstarter like vinhos did, so i might hold out for that, so instead of "dibs"ing the game, maybe I'm asking for first refusal, or to at least to be considered if it's ever offered up).

However, everytime I mention CO2 there are no shortage of takers for a game (2 in this thread already, just as an example), so maybe it is worth the club keeping hold of it. But, if I do invest in any possible deluxe version wouldn't the club copy then become obsolete?

I've been slow implementing this... a thousand apologies! I'd been trying to think of an elegant solution that doesn't require a pencil (as they will undoubtedly go missing), but I've dismissed every idea as either too expensive or impractical. I've therefore reverted to paper and a lifetime supply of pencils! Will begin deploying in early Feb...

Smile

This addresses my core underlying concern here. Namely, that the process by which we choose what games to add to (or remove from) our club library, is inclusive and reflects as many members tastes as possible (rather than it just being the sole decision of one, or a select few, individuals). That said, I think the idea that club games should ideally be gateway games and/or games with wide appeal; makes a lot of sense (more specialised or niche games, we can get ourselves).

The idea of polling members, in some form, very much appeals to me (to be honest, I was going to suggest something similar, but you beat me to it Karl). People may or may not vote; and that's fine, but just the fact that they could, I think would be a very good thing in terms of making everyone feel more included.
