I'm Jono. I'm new to the club (and Sheffield) and am looking forward to coming for the first time this evening

Is there anything I need to know/do beforehand?

Nope, just show up (upstairs at the University Arms at 19:00) and look around for people who have an open spot at their table. Some people will organize ahead of time on the forum to play a specific game, but plenty of people will just bring some games and then ask if anyone's interested in them.

(Note that if you show up late without having organized anything it's possible that everyone will have already started playing, so in that case you might have to wait for a game to finish.)
