Xia: Legends of a Drift System
Did anyone back the kickstarter for this? I'm still looking for my perfect space game and this ticks a lot of boxes.

Yeah, I backed it. It's been delayed from the original launch but I'll bring it down when I get it. Until then, consider Firefly!

What if you don't have 12 hours spare? I'd rather play something short than wait half an hour in between turns.
Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
I'm totally with Kes there, sorry Aneurin. I can't imagine choosing to spend 12 hours playing one game when I could play so many others. There are too many games I want to play!
That's also my problem with Firefly though. I'd love to play it and see how it ties into the series (fan of the show) but BGG says 240mins... Exodus also seems likely to be a bit too long for me.
So the remaining contenders are:
Empires of the Void: Pretty, with variable player powers, but cardboard ships and maybe a bit simplistic
Burning Suns: Nice ships, ridiculous variability in player powers, but circles don't tessellate!
Star Trek Fleet Captains: Loads of minis and content, but very pricey and complaints of component quality
I can't see any obvious drawbacks with Xia, except maybe a lack of player interaction?

Recent games have only been 8 hours... ok it takes another 1 hour to setup but hey... the reason I like it is mainly for player interaction... it's real diplomacy around a table... its amazing how quickly people fall out...
I actually think X-wing is a good space romp...
Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
We played Firefly a week ago, doing the training mission which they quote at 1-2 hours. It took pretty much 2 hours bang on including going through the rules (none of us had played it before but three of us had read the rules, the fourth didn't know a thing about the game or show). Going to try playing one of the "proper" campaigns this weekend and see how we get on timewise with that.
X-Wing is terrific fun, hugely enjoy that game
I was thinking about bringing Firefly along next week if there are enough people wanting a game? We'll need to bad a big table for the night to do it though.

Only 8 hours! Listen to yourself! And an hour to set up! Not a chance in hell. You're really not helping the Ti3 cause here... I also hate arguing, which is exactly why I don't like The Resistance, so that's another reason I'd never play it.

X-wing's great, but I'm looking for a 4x game here. Now if they made a Star Wars 4x game that tied in with X-wing...

Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
You can play X-wing in squads - we've done that in the past a few times and then have multiple people controlling a number of the ships each. Its a bit of a bodge but works well enough

Think she means Exploration, Expansion, and the other two?!? It would be have to be some sort of campaign... that's taking the geekyness to an extra level...

Definitely up for Firefly again. As Dave said, it didn't take that long last time. I will also add that, although it can be long, you are playing the whole time, not just waiting around for other people
Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
I've not played x wing but it could work a bit like Spartacus where you have rounds of non combat, followed by the fights? Eclipse but substitute the fights for x wing?

I'd definitely be up for trying it if you bring it in Dave. Can I come in at a full length game, though? Or would it mean you doing the training run again?

That would be EPIC! But, yeah, it would take forever, and we've been through that already...
Still, I'd play that over TI3 any day

Ask me after Sunday Two of the people have played before while the other two haven't. We're doing one of the full missions. I don't think it will be too much of a problem though - part of the problem is understanding the mechanics of the game when *noone* has played it before - there were things I'd missed or misunderstood in my readthrough that didn't really become clear until we were sat there playing it.

I'll be christening my copy of Exodus in the next couple of weeks, I'll let you know how long it takes...

Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
So, Bungle and I did that Firefly game today as mentioned...
Its definitely doable if you've never played before (in fact one of the newbies won the game) but it did take a while - we got there at 1330ish and got start around 1400-1430. Finished play at 1900 so thats 4.5-5 hours play however there were distractions and delays...
I'm defintely up for playing again on Tuesday but there are a couple of recommendations I'd make to keep things moving...
1) explaining the game takes a while so would be really helpful for any now players (looking at you here Lizzy ) read the rules beforehand so we can just deal with any clarifications and then crack on. Rules and FAQ can both be found at http://www.fireflythegame.com/howtoplay.aspx
2) everyone make an effort to streamline their turns - for example if you're headed to Persephone to do some buyin' - check through the deck before your turn comes so when you do your buy action you know espxactly what cards you're considering. Likewise, if the next person's turn can proceed while you're looking at cards then do so
3) I'll make sure all the decks are shuffled before I get there on Tuesday. Assuming you trust me to be fair in this we can just cut each decks and get started.
4) we would really want to get started as early as possible - I can be there for 7 but any earlier would be difficult... Thoughts?

Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
Just checked the release date for Xia is set for early September this year. I've been waiting ages!
Re: Xia: Legends of a Drift System
This is why I let other people back things on Kickstarter
Seems Burning Suns will come out about the same time, I might pick that one up.
