Play by Forum
Has anybody ever tried to play anything via the forum on here before? I'm thinking something like The Resistance or something like that. If so how did it go down? Complete flop? Too much hassle?
I'm trying to get a game of Resistance with the Assassin module going on another online community forum that I'm a member of but not got enough players yet. I'd try on this forum myself but access to it is blocked at work making supervision of the game difficult.
If anyone wants to join in my other game though let me know and I'll post details of the site so you can sign up to the forum. There's currently 6 slots left.

Re: Play by Forum
Funnily enough I was talking about this with one of the other forum members the other day. Game dependant I'd definitely be interested in having a pop at it sometime.
Re: Play by Forum
I'd certainly give it a try too. I'm struggling to think of many games that easily translate though I'm sure there must be loads! Getting fancy (with pictures and such) I guess you could probably do something like Mysterium?

There were a few times I wanted to dip my toe into a game of Firefly or BSG on Play By Forum but never quite got the nerve up...
Might be worth starting with something a bit lighter like Black Fleet or Formula D/Jamaica
I'm not sure how well hidden role stuff will work - I tend to base a lot of my opinions on the behaviour and actions of the other players, which would obviously be no good here.
Re: Play by Forum
They play Resistance by forum, at BGG. Also, there's a dedicated site, I think resistanceonline.com, something like that...
It's intersting, you can see voting history, and there is a chat window, but it's a lot more about analysis of voting patterns. I've played a few games online, but much prefer to play in person.

My concern with playing games like the Resistance in this manner is that determining a player's affiliation involves much more than reviewing voting history - it's about reading the people, their body language, how they react to events.
That said, I would say the same for Poker, and that seems to be quite popular on line...

Coup also works well on the iPad. Which is bizarre. Guess it comes down to a more logic deduction type game.
They play Twilight Imperium by Forum... now that must take a while! But I'd be game.

Yeah, I agree. I think online Resistance is definitely missing something, it's the lack of social in person interaction, that's a significant element of the game; without being there in person, all you have a chat window, and voting history, and mission results. It's a very different game.
I very much prefer to play the game in person!
Re: Play by Forum
Jamie, I prefer to play all games in person! I'm not much of a video-gamer nowadays (well, since I was about 18 really) but the whole concept of playing board games online seems odd to me. I get why people would but the social interaction and getting out of the house is one of the reasons I love gaming!

Yep, way more enjoyable playing in person. I'd only play online, in order to learn a game's mechanics (or in the case of Avalon online, because I'm an addict). Actually, only joking about Avalon, haven't played it online for quite some time, people tend to be very immature, harsh, unkind and a bit cliquey playing Avalon online - much much nicer playing in person.
Anyhow, great to see you're back Karl, hope you have more free time now and can make it down on Tuesdays.

Re: Play by Forum
I'm hoping so too. I probably won't be down for at least a couple of weeks, work dependant, but I'm in real need of some serious gaming! Played plenty of non-gamer friendly stuff recently but nothing meaty or shouty!
Hope to be accusing you of being a spy soon!
