Hard to say after one viewing but I’m leaning towards preferring Last Jedi to Force Awakens but there really isn’t much in it.

Same, I think Last Jedi is better than TFA, mainly because it felt more of an original story compared to New Hope 2.0 aka The Force Awakens. It was by no means perfect though. Overall I had a lot of fun watching it, but thought they could have slimmed it down by 15 minutes or so and the film would be no worse for it.

I wouldn't go quite that far but I agree it was a bit rubbish. I left feeling underwhelmed and wanting my money back. My overall rating would be "ok if you want to waste 2 and half hours of time"

There was one part in particular.

The Length did not bother me at all - and I sat through 2.5 hours of the Force Awakens before it...

Seems to me like everyone agrees about all the ways the film was terrible. Just some people enjoyed it anyway and others didn't

Yeah. Mixed feelings. I am curious about the other jedi trainees that left with Kylie.

I guess that's the problem - the story before this current one seems like it would be a better story. Never felt that about the original trilogy. Never needed to know how Vader became himself... or how the emporoer came to power because the story that was presented held its own.

I can't really sum up this movie. I can only think of it as an enormous jumble of specific things I liked and specific things I did not. You can see a lot of hands trying to make their impression on this one. Things it did well in one scene it would do badly in the next, from conversations to CGI to enviroments. I found the intro to be a high point, but the next hour or so was a real slog. I don't think the film quite managed to fully pull itself out by the end, but there were certainly moments of brilliance. These were some of the things that had stuck in my mind a day after seeing it:

Black Panther is pretty good:

  • All the major supporting characters, friends and villians, have a ton of personality and charisma. Klaw and Shuri are my favourites. T'Challa himself is kind of boring though — a pretty passive hero most of the time.

  • The enviroments and costumes are better than anything Marvel has done before. They're vibrant, detailed and original, and really drew me into this fictional, afro-futurepunk culture. The image generally looks somehow richer that other blockbusters, too. A really attractive movie... except when it gets CGI heavy. Most scenes with T'Challa suited up look pretty bad. This just exacerbates the biggest problem with the film, which is...

  • The black panther suit really is the most boring superpower yet put to screen. It's just a magic costume that comes out of his arse and activates god-mode. Most scenes with the black panther might as well be video of a plastic action figure knocking over rag dolls. Then he has his purple energy fart, that knocks out eveyone nearby, just to make sure there is no possibility of an interesting or tense fight while he is in costume.

Thankfully, most of the film is not really about this, but it really drags down the final act.

Felt the same as with Wonder Woman: really good, until near the end, then it sucks.

Also, if this movie had a theme or a message, please explain to me what it was.
