Yeah, I saw that trailer and though it looks like a film I'd either love or find really annoying, with the probabilities leaning towards annoyance.
I don't go to the cinema nearly as much as I'd like. I've only seen two films so far this year, but they've both been excellent; Oscar-bait 'Birdman' and New Zealand vampire mockumentary 'What We Do In The Shadows' (with Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords). That was a one-off showing at the lovely new Curzon cinema on George Street.

Re: The Movie Thread
Anyone booked tickets for midnight Age of Ultron this week? I didn't realise how soon it was (Wednesday!). There are some not completely terrible seats left but they're all lonesome single seats, which is fine, but if I need to  afterwards have discussions of the type "Wasn't is cool when [?]", "Who would win in a fight between [?]" and "Joss Whedon is such a [?]", I'm relying on people who have already booked. So, anyone going?
I'm not super fussed, I can always watch it in IMAX the next day (speaking of which, DaveB, according to the Cineworld website the midnight showing isn't IMAX). But it sounds fun and I'm not working Thursday morning so why not.

Why do you assume that the screen currently available is the only one on which they're showing it? :-p

I take it you haven't been dragged to 50 shades of (zero chemistry) yet...

No I bribed her best friend to take her instead

They show unavailable screens, so I was assuming they're only showing it on the screens they say they are showing it on

Yep, watching the triple-bill on the IMAX - 1900 through to about 0230. Work the next morning will be fun...

Sounds like it will be a good time for me to challenge you to a game of Star Realms then ;-)DaveB wrote:Yep, watching the triple-bill on the IMAX - 1900 through to about 0230. Work the next morning will be fun...

With the gaps between movies that's not necessarily a terrible idea

Re: The Movie Thread
Any of the "Sheffield Movie Goers Club" seen or tried this:
http://www.cineworld.co.uk/meerkat-movies
It's like Orange Wednsdays, except it also works on Tuesdays. It only works once a week, it lasts for a year, and it does, like Orange Wednesdays, work with the Unlimited Card for two "free" tickets. To get it, you have buy something though Compare The Market.
Mercifully, some things on Compare The Market don't cost very much at all. Even for a penniless free spirit such as myself.

I'm going to see if I can get some single day travel insurance for less than £2. On a related note: anyone want to see a film on Wednesday?

Ant-Man is one of the best three movies of the year, easily.

Aneurin wrote:Well if it's competing with Jurassic world it wouldn't be hard to be good.
I rather liked Jurassic World - second best of the four for me. Admittedly still not a patch on the first film though.
Re: The Movie Thread
I don't think Jurassic World was projected correctly in my showing. The picture wasn't sharp and didn't fill the whole screen, with black bars on all four sides. I went down to ask staff member about it, and he said that is just the way the film was shot, which I accepted at the time but doubted it again when I sat back down. It bugged me. I googled it and the film was shot in an unusual aspect ratio (2:1, I think), which must have been what the guy was talking about, but I think Cineworld screwed up as well.
It wasn't the only thing wrong, through. I'm pretty sure the dinos looked better in Jurassic Park. And the flow of the film was so dodgy. I just couldn't get into it. Shame, because I liked the setting of an up-and-running park, and there were some good characters and situations and lines, but it wasn't very well put together in my opinion.
Still, there have been a bunch of awesome films that came out this year (in the UK): Mad Max, John Wick, Age of Ultron, It Follows, Whiplash, The Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher, Selma, Birdman... I've seen a few real stinkers this year but they usually give me a laugh or something to think about. But the buzz I get after I see something I really liked makes suffering through Jupiter Ascending worthwhile.

That's bullshit - no matter what the aspect ratio of the film, they should be able to fill either the horizontal or the vertical of the screen. That it wasn't would imply that the wrong lens was in use for the film (or it wasn't properly attached to the projector)
As an aside, when filming a movie the camera typically captures a much bigger frame than what is finally shown on screen - this is to give the director freedom to pick the correct framing of his shot in the editing booth.
As for the dinosaurs, I'm a -big- fan of well done practical effects (one of the reasons I loved Mad Max) - Jurassic Park was a masterful balancing act of CGI and Practical effects, but some of the Cgi is looking pretty dated these days...
Re: The Movie Thread
I just felt that Speilberg was almost taking the piss out of me for buying a ticket just to see another dinosaur movie with a bigger more bad-ass dino in it... The whole bigger is better was over played in the plot, script and visuals.
I didn't have any screen problems - went for IMAX 3D and it was pretty impressive as a visual spectacle.
But... 3 things majorly bugged me...
1/ it was almost exactly the same story as JP1... Just a bigger budget.
2/ the motorcycle scene... Those raptors were jumping over logs running through terrain that would have been totally unsuitable for te chasing vehicles.
3/ oh look T-Rex kills bad-ass dino - hooray... When did they stop worrying that there was a
Bloody great T-Rex on the loose?
And one final thing - there were zero surprises.
The only thing that I enjoyed was Byrce.

Re: The Movie Thread
I thought the entire film was dire. I was cringing (not in a good way) from start to finish. Not sure what it was; probably was a lot to do with the incredulous way the dinosaurs were behaving...
Okay, dinosaurs walking around, that's not entirely credible; but, the way the big scary one was super intelligent, enough to leave scratch marks on the wall and stop radiating heat; if we did bring back dinosaurs, they wouldn't do that! Neither would they be our pets and attack on command, then suddenly decide to join with their big brother dinosaur with similar genes, then suddenly decide to be a pet again (because human has puppy dog eyes and doesn't want to die). I felt I was watching something more in line with My Little Pony, than a film about nature's best, 65 million years ago.
Also, the way the humans were behaving, given the gravity of the situation, was completely stupid. It wasn't long before I was rooting for the dinosaurs; wanting them to kill the humans....

Re: The Movie Thread
Don't know what you mean! You wouldn't run down disney Main Street rather into one of the many buildings if flying dinosaurs were attacking you?
And I get the whole film was about genetic splicing - but did anyone else notice that ridiculous looking terradon-Rex thing?
Bringing this back to Games slightly though - someone on that production team should re-skin zooloretto with dinos - where occasionally they escape!

The Martian had me absolutely gripped. I think it really engaged the problem solving part of my brain as well as all the other bits that get engaged by films. Really enjoyed it! One or two slightly silly bits, but they didn't detract from the overall effect.Sam wrote:Sicario. Holy Shit.

Re: The Movie Thread
Re: The Martian - A couple of changes from the book really bothered me, most of them didn't, although was a bit weird that because of how then final cut was put together some stuff was happening for no apparent reason at all
By and large though I thought it was a fantastic film that I really enjoyed.

Re: The Movie Thread
Can we do a club outing when this film based on Mafia/Werewolf comes out at new year? Looks like it's going to be terrible, mind...

Ooh what was different in the book? And what happened for no reason? Or do I need to read the book?
