Tuesday 24th March
So, as per the thread for the 17th, I'd like to have another crack at Legendary Encounters. I've not tried it yet, but I'd like to have a pop at the "Aliens" scenario
Game plays up to 5 people, and Sam and Paul have both already registered interest - anyone else?

Re: Tuesday 24th March
I'm curious about Hanabi. Anyone got it? Might make a good game to play later in the evening. I'm going to try to avoid Avalon this week. Somebody please keep Jamie away from me.
I'm wondering what to buy with the £20 Patriot Games voucher from the Pitchcar tournament. I don't really want to spend much more than the voucher so most big box games are out, seeing as Patriot doesn't seem to like to stray from the RRP. That's fine with me, though, it makes it easier to take on the bike, and I'm taking a trip back to the homeland (Isle of Wight) in a few weeks and would like to introduce the family to a few games that are both beginner and luggage friendly. But something we'll enjoy at the club is also important. I never ask for much.
Top of the list right now is a Summoner Wars starter pack. Or Hanabi is cheap enough that I could get another cheap game as well. Maybe Avalon, but I'd rather buy something I've played less of and we have pretty consistent access to it at the club anyway.
Any thoughts?
Looking forward to Legendary Encounters, by the way.
PS: Tom, Kes, have you spent your vouchers get? What did you get?

Re: Tuesday 24th March
Anybody want to try Village?
"Life in the village is hard – but life here also allows the inhabitants to grow and prosper as they please. One villager might want to become a friar. Another might feel ambitious and strive for a career in public office. A third one might want to seek his luck in distant lands.
Each player will take the reins of a family and have them find fame and glory in many different ways. There is one thing you must not forget, however: Time will not stop for anyone and with time people will vanish. Those who will find themselves immortalized in the village chronicles will bring honor to their family and be one step closer to victory.
Village is a game full of tactical challenges. A smart and unique new action mechanism is responsible for keeping turns short and yet still tactically rich and full of difficult decisions. Also unique is the way this game deals with the delicate subject of death; as a natural and perpetual part of life in the village, thoughts of death will keep you focused on smart time-management."

Re: Tuesday 24th March
I have Hanabi, happy to bring and play it. Other than that, it might be Le Havre with Clive but I'll bring a couple of classics down to - Catan and a version of TTR.

Re: Tuesday 24th March
Sam - I don't have Hanabi but have played it a couple of times. It's *good* but I don't think it would have the replayability factor for me. The two times I played it were a year apart, which is sort of in line with how often I'd want to play! I've played the iPad version of Summoner Wars and really liked it. I think that's a game with a lot of replayability given all the different factions.
I was just racking my brain for other small box games in about that price range and my other thought was Council of Verona. It has some of the bluffing elements of The Resistance / Avalon and character card powers like Love Letter. Not as much meat or replayability as Summoner Wars but might be better for playing with non-gamers. Anyway, then I had a look and it seems to be difficult to get hold of (I think because they're preparing to print a new edition with a nice magnet-close box) so it might not be an option at all!

Re: Tuesday 24th March
The Summoner Wars box I'm looking at is a starter box with only two factions, so not as replayable as the app, but I can always add to it if I like it.
I'm limited by what Patriot stocks, which eliminates some strong choices like Bohnanza, San Juan, Hive and Innovation. Council of Verona... is in stock, surprisingly. Cheap, too. I'll look into it (though I don't like the artwork). Thanks for the suggestion.
EDIT: Nope, my mistake, not in stock, I didn't have the "In Stock" box ticked.
Saboteur is another option. Haven't played it yet, would like to.

Re: Tuesday 24th March
I like Saboteur, though I would strongly suggest getting the expansion (Saboteur 2) as well as it makes it a much better game and also helps it scale better to smaller numbers if that's a consideration. I'll bring them along on Tuesday if you like? (Currently I should be able to make it...)Sam wrote:Saboteur is another option. Haven't played it yet, would like to.

I've never actually played the expansion (despite owning it for over a year) - I wouldn't mind having a crack at it after Legendary Encounters if time permits
Re: Tuesday 24th March
Sounds good to me
I like the idea of Village, a quick worker placement game where your family of workers die of old age and the plague. "The game ends when the graveyard is full", lol. I like the theme too, and it's got a high BGG rating. Doesn't look like I'll have time this week, but I'm in next time you bring it, Rik.

One spot remaining - Its yours
Re: Tuesday 24th March
I haven't played Saboteur yet, would love to give it a whirl. Alos, I quite like a game of Catan every now and then. Would play either on Tuesday, if available.
Re: Tuesday 24th March
Saboteur plays up to 12 people with the expansion so plenty of spots for a big game of this :-)Jamie wrote:I haven't played Saboteur yet, would love to give it a whirl. Alos, I quite like a game of Catan every now and then. Would play either on Tuesday, if available.
Re: Tuesday 24th March
I'd like to play Village too Rik, but I'm booked up for this coming Tuesday - can we do it the following week?
I can bring Mad King Ludwig, Kes, if you can find people to play it with.

Re: Tuesday 24th March
I'll not be there in person, but I will try to be there in ethereal form through the medium of Star Realms.
If you're doing Village the week after can you put me down too Rik? Been wanting to play that for ages.
And Castles of Mad King Ludwig is good, people should play it. I am very bad at it.

I put my voucher towards getting Space Alert, which I still haven't got around to playing. If anyone wants to spend 10 minutes being shouted at by a computer and then exploding, let me know and I'll bring it along.
I had a few family games of Hanabi last Christmas and it went down well. I introduced it to my siblings as being a game where the theme is a pretty firework display but what it's really all about is humiliatingly public failure. I think it's one of those games which is fun when sober but plays a lot better when you're just the right level of drunk, rather like Mascarade.
